It stands as a testament to humanity’s pursuit of finding more opportunities to eat that we came up with a new terminology and time slot to eat, like Brunch.

So, where did the term Brunch come from?

When you ask those in the food industry there is a lot of confusion surrounding its origins. Some say it originated in England, while others say New York, yet it can be confirmed the word brunch first appeared in print in an 1895 Hunter’s Weekly article by British author Guy Beringer, in an article aptly titled ‘Brunch: A Plea’.1

The article goes on to impress the virtues of brunch, but mainly because of the fact that back then the Sunday ritual was an early morning breakfast, then church, then a heavy post-church meal. The creation of brunch was to provide Saturday night revellers with a bit of amnesty from early morning breakfasts, allowing them to sleep longer to recover from the night’s festivities, and saving the heavier meal for later in the day.2

Now it makes more sense why it’s wedged tightly between breakfast and lunch. However, brunch has now become its own cuisine, and below are five popular Brunch dish ideas you could consider for your own establishment.

1. Berry muesli

With a mixture of raspberries, lychees in syrup, black plums and fruit-free muesli topped with ice cream for a fresh, yet cheeky brunch.

6. One-Eyed Sandwiches (Toad-In-A-Hole)

Take two delicious slices of Bakers Maison gluten free white bread, lightly toast and butter both sides. Cut a hole in the centre using a biscuit cutter. Place some butter in a pan and fry the toast along with their rounds for 1-2 minutes each side, then crack an egg in the hole of each piece of toast and cook until done.
