The Bread Board

The Bread Board

One grain to rule them all?

When it comes to bread, do you know how many variations there are? There’s a lot. Sure, it’s not a definitive number, but when you consider there are well over 300 variations in Germany alone, of which some even have regional variations , you can kind of get the picture.

But one of the most confusing questions anyone has asked in regard to bread is: “Which bread is the best?”

In this blog, we focus on the three most common types of grain bread – wholemeal, wholegrains and multigrain, which are typically considered to have the most health benefits. So, what’s the difference between these grain breads and is there one that stands out superior to all the rest?

Wholemeal

Packed with more fibre than white flour, Wholemeal bread is made from finely milled wholegrains, which attributes to the plain brown colour of the bread. But that’s not where the benefits end. Filled with more vitamins and minerals than many white breads, Wholemeal also contains a higher GI than wholegrain breads.

Wholegrains

It’s all in the name really. Wholegrain bread does have the whole grain in it. A rich source of carbohydrates, the bread also packs in unsaturated (good) fats, protein, as well as vitamins and minerals. But that’s just the beginning, as they also contain three types of fibre, helping to promote good ‘gut health’. Combined with soy and linseed, wholegrain bread then also has the added benefit of healthy omega 3 fats.

Multigrains

Often made from white flour with some added grains, multigrain bread tends to have more fibre and a lower GI than white bread, meaning it gives you longer lasting energy. Perfect for your kid’s lunches so they can function physically and mentally at school.

So, there you have it. While there is no definitive answer as to which bread has the ‘one grain to rule them all’, we hope that shedding further light on their properties will help you make a more informed decision when you next make a purchase.
